A Guide to West Amman's Residential Districts
Best Areas to Live in Amman for Expats, Diplomats & Executives
West Amman is not one neighbourhood but several, each with a different character. This guide compares the main residential districts — Um Uthaina, Abdoun, Deir Ghbar, Sweifieh, and Jabal Amman — so newcomers, diplomatic households, and relocating executives can weigh the trade-offs before choosing where to live.
Um Uthaina
Central, established, residential-commercial balance
Um Uthaina sits between the 5th and 6th Circles in West Amman, positioned between the international rhythm of Abdoun and the business density of Sweifieh. It's an established residential district with a mix of apartment buildings and villas, close to the 5th Circle hotel cluster and a short drive from Abdoun's embassy corridor, Sweifieh's retail centre, and the Shmeisani/Khalda area where several UN agencies are based. SHIHAB Elite Residences is located here.
Abdoun
Diplomatic and embassy district, upscale
Abdoun is West Amman's best-known diplomatic address, home to numerous foreign embassies including the US Embassy, and long associated with diplomats, embassy staff, and business elites. It combines tree-lined residential streets of villas and upscale apartments with lively commercial strips of cafés and restaurants, and carries a security-conscious, international character.
Deir Ghbar
Quiet, family-oriented, secure
Deir Ghbar sits between Sweifieh and Abdoun and is generally regarded as one of Amman's quieter, more family-focused residential areas, with a mix of apartments and villas and a reputation for security. It suits households prioritising a calm residential setting with reasonable proximity to Sweifieh's shops and Abdoun's amenities.
Sweifieh
Commercial and retail heart of West Amman
Sweifieh is West Amman's longstanding retail and dining district, anchored by malls including City Mall and Galleria Mall and the pedestrianised Wakalat Street. It's a busier, more urban environment than Um Uthaina, Abdoun, or Deir Ghbar — a strong choice for residents who want shops, restaurants, and nightlife within walking distance, at the cost of a more residential-feeling street.
Jabal Amman
Historic, cultural, walkable
Jabal Amman, centred on the well-known Rainbow Street, is one of Amman's oldest and most characterful districts — stone houses dating to the early 20th century, now home to cafés, art galleries, and cultural venues, in a pedestrian-friendly setting. It suits residents drawn to Amman's history and arts scene over the newer, more purely residential districts of West Amman.
None of these districts is objectively "best" — the right choice depends on whether a household prioritises a quiet residential setting, proximity to embassies and international organisations, retail and nightlife within walking distance, or historic character. Most West Amman districts are a short drive from one another, and many residents choose based on which trade-off matters most to their daily routine.
Why Um Uthaina
For households that want Um Uthaina's central position — between Abdoun's embassy corridor and Sweifieh's retail district, without the traffic of either — SHIHAB Elite Residences is a privately owned, six-residence building on an elevated two-street plot in Um Uthaina, offering a single-owner alternative to the floor-by-floor multi-owner buildings common across West Amman. See the Luxury Apartments page or the Um Uthaina neighbourhood page for detail.
Um Uthaina, also commonly transliterated as Umm Uthaina or Um Uthaynah, is a residential district in West Amman.
